art with an emphasis on the natural world
BIO: Jennifer Preston Chushcoff is a word nerd with a Halloween heart. She was born and raised in Southern California and continued her trek north after attending UC Berkeley. Jenn has been frolicking in the woods and water of the Pacific Northwest ever since.

She’s an award-winning author, artist and Master Gardener with work in anthologies, journals and children’s books. Her nature-inspired art appears in galleries and private collections. Jenn is excited to connect the South Sound community through the arts organization Creative Colloquy and has enjoyed watching it rise from the waters like a mighty kraken. She was recently awarded a TAIP grant to create a book of her poems, photos and facts called, WA IS WATER.

Though working as both a writer and artist can be challenging, she is thankful she has the opportunity to pursue both, since they inform and enhance each other. For her writing site, visit www.byJenn.com.

Process: Heavily textured, worn surfaces are magical and full of history. I strive to incorporate the look of time into my art. Viewers should dive into the layers, excavating with their eyes. In my current work, I'm focused on capturing a mood. Mixed media and altered photography allow me to share a feeling. Liquid acrylic and resin art are exciting beacuse each piece is a glimpse into another universe. Some become star-spangled galaxies while others look like agate slices. The magic and mystery of our world inspire me every day.

For many mixed media pieces, I create highly-textural surfaces by starting with a plaster base. Once that base layer is dry, I'm able to scrape, sand and gouge. Using a wood panel allows me to work the art hard, literally carving it. Wood-working, pottery tools, found objects, old credit cards – I use lots of things to make interesting marks until I'm satisifed. Layers of embedded objects add interest and the encasutic (hot wax) and resin process allow for luminous depth.

When I start a new painting I let it unfold, allowing intuition and experience to take over as I respond. The goal is to stay playful and experiment. No matter what is added and subtracted, each layer is integral to the finished piece.

I’m honored to have exhibited in over 30 galleries and museums, with many pieces in private collections.

I’m especially excited about shows that give me an opportunity to challenge boundaries, explore new techniques and display my darker, mischievous side.
